NAACP Misguidedly Reverses Previous Courageous Stances on Pro-Life Issues by Francine Anene

Ryan Bomberger1, a black pro-life activist whose biological mother was raped and decided to give him up for abortion, created provocative pro-life billboard campaigns with slogans such as “Should Have Been Aborted” and “Black Children are an Endangered Species,” and

The NAACP recently filed a lawsuit against Bomberger for using their name and trademark to oppose abortion. However, in the past, the NAACP helped lead the fight against forced sterilization and abortion, a policy that “marginalizes” rather than “advances” minorities.

New York Times, Dec 17, 1967; Headline: “Negroes Criticize Family Planners: Birth Curb Group is Accused by Pittsburgh N.A.A.C.P.”

Mr. Stewart, one of two national Planned Parenthood officials who flew here yesterday to rebut the N.A.A.C.P. charges, said that the accusations had national implications because they touched all Planned Parenthood operations in the United States metropolitan areas…. The N.A.A.C.P. contended in its statement that Planned Parenthood clinics here were operated “without moral responsibility to the black race and become an instrument of genocide for the Negro people…..The association charged that Planned Parenthood clinics were situated in neighborhoods where Negro population was high and that birth control pills fell into the hands of minors.  The association also contended that the Office of Economic Opportunity provided funds for clinics and along with its local counterpart, the Mayor’s Committee on Human Resources, should be investigated for its part in determining Planned Parenthood policies.

New York Times, May 23, 1971. Headline: “Sterilization Bill Blocked in Illinois.”

“The connection of this bill to Nazism is so close it scares me.” said Representative Harold Washington.  Mr. Washington “strenuously opposed the legislation.  He said the bill was aimed not only against blacks, but poor people as a class.”  The Illinois House of Representatives blocked legislation that “would have forced welfare parents of three children to undergo sterilization as a condition for continued welfare aid….. the bill would have required a vasectomy or tubal ligation as a condition for continued public aid for a person who fathered or gave birth to three children while on welfare.  It would have provided a $100 payment to each person undergoing the operation.

Harold Washington was the first African American to become mayor of Chicago.  He also served in the Illinois House of Representatives, the state senate, and the U.S. House of Representatives.  He was a member of the NAACP.

The campaign advertisement shows the NAACP’s current stance on abortion, though they have already shown frequent support for Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest pro-abortion organization, which the Radiance Foundation calls “a tragic alliance that exists between the nation’s oldest civil rights group and the nation’s abortion giant,” in their article in February.

This alliance is especially perplexing in the context of the stated goals of abortion clinic owners.  Family Planning Associates (FPA) is the leading provider of abortions in California with $70 million in annual revenues and a net yearly profit of $5 million.  Dr. Edward C. Allred along with Kenneth L. Wright founded FPA, and Allred has spoken about his personal motivation for this business in an interview with the San Diego Union.  “Population control is too important to be stopped by some right-wing pro-life types,” the newspaper quoted Allred as saying. “Take the new influx of Hispanic immigrants. Their lack of respect of democracy and social order is frightening. I hope I can do something to stem that tide; I’d set up a clinic in Mexico for free if I could. Maybe one in Calexico would help. The survival of our society could be at stake… The Aid to Families With Dependent Children program is the worst boondoggle ever created. When a sullen black woman can decide to have a baby and get welfare and food stamps and become a burden to all of us it’s time to stop. In parts of South Los Angeles having babies for welfare is the only industry the people have.”2

California is a leader in forced sterilization and abortion. In the 1930s, members of the Nazi party asked California eugenicists for advice on how to run their own sterilization program.  “Germany used California’s program as its chief example that this was a working, successful policy,” Cogdell [cultural historian at the University of California-Davis and author of “Eugenic Design”] said. “They modeled their law on California’s law.” 3

Planned Parenthood is the leading provider of abortions worldwide and is even wealthier than Family Planning Associates. Recently, “seventy-two members of the U.S. Congress have signed a letter to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) requesting updated detailed information about government grants to Planned Parenthood…..The request asks for more information following a GAO report compiled and released in 2010 at the request of 31 members of Congress that raised more questions than it answered. While Planned Parenthood’s annual reports show it took in $2.3 billion from government grants and programs from 2002 to 2008, the Planned Parenthood audits relied upon by the GAO in compiling the expenditure report could only account for expenditures of $657.1 million during the same time period.” 4 Lothrop Stoddard was a board member of Planned Parenthood.  He personally met with Adolf Hitler, and his writings were “featured in Nazi school textbooks.”5

Dr. Alevda King says that both she herself and Martin Luther King were cruelly manipulated by PP.  Alveda C. King says, “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a nonviolent man who said:  “The Negro cannot win if he is willing to sell the future of his children for his personal and immediate comfort and safety.” (Page 53 of The Words of Martin Luther King, Jr.)  Following Margaret Sanger’s strategy to dupe “colored ministers” PPH selected Dr. King and other Black Leaders for awards. Dr. King supported natural family planning, called the “rhythm method” in his day. He would never agree to mass murder by abortion, and chemical birth control that is linked to illness.  “PPH also lied to me, telling me that my babies were ‘blobs of tissue’ and that ‘abortion wouldn’t hurt as bad as having teeth pulled.’ It was to be ‘our secret.’ I was abortion vulnerable, and they took advantage of that. They lied then, to my uncle and to me. They still lie. Planned Parenthood, stop using my uncle to promote your injustice!”6
